- Get everyone involved. Unlike older players, young children often lose interest when they have to wait in line for their turn. Instead, incorporate drills that allow players to have the ball at their feet, which will increase comfort and get kids excited to play.
- Play small-sided games. Young children often play a style of soccer known as “bunch ball” in which every outfield player on both teams swarms to the ball and kicks wildly at it. By playing small-sided games such as 3v3, you can help players learn the fundamentals of the game and get more touches on the ball.
- Focus on individual skills. At a young age, players need to learn basic individual skills such as dribbling, passing, and shooting. Over time, they will parlay those skills into a more team-oriented strategy.
